Herod the Great

Herod Antipas
- Son of Herod the Great
- Imprisoned and executed John the Baptist (Matt. 14)
- Expressed curiosity, then animosity, toward Jesus (Luke 9; 13)
- Mocked Jesus when he stood on trial (Luke 23)
Pharisees
- Group of Jewish leaders primarily located in Jerusalem and divided into three schools: Shammai, Hillel, and Gamaliel
- Especially concerned with proper temple administration and obedience to the Torah, including “fencing” the Law (Matt. 5:20)
- Opposed Jesus and his authoritative teachings (Matt. 3:7; Mark 2–3)
- Included Nicodemus (John 3) and Paul (Acts 22:3)
Sadducees
- Group of Jewish leaders primarily located in Jerusalem and comprised of wealthy, priestly families
- Rejected extra-biblical Pharisaic traditions and resurrection (Mark 12)
- Opposed Jesus and his authoritative teachings (Matt. 3:7; 16)
- Included Caiaphas (Matt. 26)
The Apostles (name them)
The Apostles were twelve men hand-selected by Jesus to witness his life, ministry, death, and resurrection and to serve as the foundation for the early Church.

Cornelius

1. Centurion and devout God-fearer who gave generously to the needy and prayed regularly
2. Had a vision where an angel of God told him to send for Peter
3. Received the Holy Spirit during Peter’s sermon, confirming to the Jews that the Gospel was also for the Gentiles
Barnabas
- Levite and native of Cyprus whose name means “son of encouragement” (Acts 4)
- Companion of Paul on some of his missionary journeys (Acts 13–15)
- Disagreed with Paul about John Mark, prompting a split (Acts 15)
Stephen
- Man chosen by early church leaders to serve (Acts 6)
- Preached one of the sermons in Acts (7)
- Was stoned to death by Jewish opponents of Christianity (Acts 7)
Paul
- Pharisee (Gamaliel) turned Christian on the road to Damascus (Acts 9)
- Persecuted the early church before becoming its greatest advocate (Acts 8)
- Wrote many NT epistles (Rom.; 1 Cor.; 2 Cor.; Gal.; Eph.; Phil.; Col.; 1 Thess.; 2 Thess; 1 Tim.; 2 Tim; Titus; Philem.)
- Went on four missionary journeys to upbuild the early church before his imprisonment in Rome (Acts 13–28)
Timothy
- Half-Jewish native of Lystra who joined Paul on his second missionary journey (Acts 16–18)
- Paul’s “true child in the faith” and the recipient of 1 Timothy and 2 Timothy
- Was later imprisoned for his faith and ministry (Heb. 13:23)
James
- Half-brother of Jesus and leader in the early church (Matt. 13:55; Acts 15)
- Authored the book of James
