Bullying and violence- Cain and Abel

A

Caun was jealous of brother Abel
God said to CaIn ‘sin is lurking at the door… you must master’
Cauns angry thoughts led to violence
Cain plotted to kill his brother out in field
‘Cain rose up against brother Abel,and killed him’
God said ‘ your brother’s blood is crying out to me from the ground’

The story tells us yo be able to master your anger and jealousy and not to make iy overcome you as it could lead to violence. Violence can not only hurt someone but also hurt God ehich you are comitting a sin. Violence is rejection for what God wants in the world

Matthew 5:21-22-

A

‘You shall not murder, and
anyone who murders will be
subject to judgment.’ But I tell
you that anyone who is angry
with a brother or sister will be
subject to judgment.”

-talking about physical violence because your doing something violent to one another
-violence is unacceptable as its hurting someone and will be judged by God
-affect relationship with Gof and can lead to being judged by Gif and going to hell

-talks about verbal abuse
-you should onlu praise with mouth and is unacceptable to curse human beings and what you say
-words can destroy a person self asteem,cause fear, and leave a sense of powerlessness

Forgiveness-in bible

A

-Peter asked how many times he should forgive his brother ‘as many as seven times’ Jesus replied ‘Seventy seven times’(Matthee 18-21-22) meaning we should always forgive
-the message of the parable of unforgiving servants is that God only forgives those who are willing to forgive others

Strengths and weakness kf forgiving

A

Strengths:
-managing emotions and behaviour
-staying faithful to God
-hurt,anger and revenge is bad mentally
-helps you heal

Weaknesses:
-person could commit the same sin over again
-supressing anger can lead to health problems
-only God can forgive infinite
-being too forgiving make more likely you will br hurt

Reconciliation

A

Restoring harmony after relationships have broken down

Revonciliation brings:
-appreciation acceptance of each other
-more peaceful future
-opportunities to learn from past
-respect for other religions and beliefs
-to live without fear
-stringer relationship

‘Peace i leave with you. My peace i give to you’-reconciliation leads to peace that Jesus prayed for in last supper

Justice

A

-catholics teach that its God’s desire that everyone should be treated fairly
-Old testament prophet Amos taught creating justice is more important than worship is done correctly
-injustice can cause people to lose sense of self-worth and self-respect. Can deny people dingnity as people treated unfairly such as apparteid era in south africa

        But Jesus showed righteous anger (cleansing of Temple)
        Most Christians believe righteous anger is acceptable if
        it is because of an injustice

Violent protests christian and other views

Christian views:
-Most christians are against violent protests
- most catholics agree with uk law that it is legitamate to protests peacefully
-many christians believe that violent protests is inaffective and damaging way to create change and may result in loss of life

-some people will support violent protests as some people are not harmed
-It is sometimes
necessary - to
make a
government take
notice and end injustice
-some people supported violent protests by suffragetter movement in early 20th century

Why might going to war be a problem for catholics

A

• Taking human life goes against the commandment ‘do not
murder’ and the Sanctity of Life
• However, the Catholic Church teaches that it is sometimes
necessary to go to war e.g. to protect innocent people.
• They follow the Just War Theory…a set of conditions
(rules) that must be met for a war to be justified

Wepaons if mass destruction-wepaons thst can kill large numbers of people
Chemical weapons-toxic chemicals with the intention to kill or injure ehich is banned under international law
Bological weapons-weapons that use disease-producing agents like bacertia,viruses and toxins against humans to cause disease or death

-they are completely indiscriminate and have long-term effects
-they are totally didproportionate to any possible success that might folloe on from their use
-with WMD the possibility of success is small;there is no ‘victors,only victoms’(pope benedict)
-cost of researching,building and maintaining these wepaons are great;prevents governments from soending to improve people’s lives
-possession lf these weapons increases tension and fear,making the world less safe
