Matthew he is named
Emmanuel
Joseph did not question the
role he had to play
Titles of jesus-word of god
• The Word (Jesus) is eternal
• The Word of God is God - God’s self expression
• The Word and God are united yet distinct
• The Word of God gives life, light and guidance
‘…and the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have
seen his glory….full of grace and truth.’
(John 1:14)
Grace = love … so Jesus is an expression of God’s love for humans
Titles of jesus-son of man
• Jesus called himself this when referring to his future
suffering
• It emphasises that he was fully human
“Jesus began to teach that the son kf the man must undergo great suffering”-mark 8:31
Titles of jesus-son of God
• At Jesus’ trial by the Sanhedrin he was asked ‘Are
you the Son of God?’
• Jesus replied ‘I am’
• This shows that he was also fully God
• During his life on earth he limited himself to the
human condition
The ICHTHUS
• Greek word ‘ICHTHUS’ meaning ‘fish.’
• It is also an acronym:
I – Iesous (Jesus)
CH – Christos (Christ)
TH – Theou (of God)
U – Uios (Son)
S – Soter (Saviour)

Catholics attitudes to religious art
• Statues of Jesus help us focus on his qualities, his life and
helps us pray
• Note: the statue itself is not being worshipped
• Jesus was fully human
• Jesus can be shown as any ethnicity – all people were saved
-some christians belive that a statue of jesus can help people to concentrate on aspetcs of jesus teachings and life so it can inspire us to be more like jesus
-guves us a better understanding of what jesus might of felt so we can feel the same pain and love as him
-it can guve people hope and courage if ever down as brungs closer to God
Contrasting views to religious arts
• It goes against the second commandment ‘do not worship idols’
– this is the view of Jews
• People may think the statue itself is being worshipped
• We cannot portray an infinite God accurately. Some christians think its therefore wrong to hse humanity of jesus as a basis for any depiction,as it could destroy people understanding of divinity of jesus
• Art can be misleading– we do not know what Jesus looked like so wrong to depic him in a physical way
• Jesus was a human – not stone or wood…. So the proper way
to worship is to serve others
Moral teachings of jesus

teach people how to please God

who are blessed (made holy) in
God’s eyes.
‘I have not come to abolish the law but to fulfil it’
(Matthew 5:17)
• Jesus developed the Jewish laws to make them
more perfect
• The Old Testament law focused on actions people
should or shouldn’t do
• Jesus taught that people’s attitudes are more
important – this will please God
