Why do some people get married?
As a religious duty, for money, for love, as a family expectation
What is marriage?
A serious, lifelong public commitment, and a legal contract which brings security to a relationship and protects the rights of each partner.
What is a civil partnership?
A legal registration for a same sex couple
What is cohabitation?
When couples live together even if they aren’t married
What is a nuclear family?
A family that traditionally consists of a mum , dad, plus children. A nuclear family is considered a typical family unit in the western world.
What is an extended family?
The nuclear family plus any other relatives, usually grandparents, living with the family.
What are the 4 common natures of a family?
Nuclear, extended, single-parent, and polygamy
How long do Muslim weddings traditionally last?
5 days, but this depends on cultural traditions of the Muslim country or the area involved
What is the Nikkah?
A simple ceremony where the bride and groom will make a commitment to each other.
Where do most Nikkah’s take place?
At home, or a banqueting location. Not the mosque though
What is a mahr?
The dowry, which the broom has to be given to the bride
What can the mahr be?
Money, clothes, house etc
What is a Walima?
A wedding banquet, which is normally held after the Nikkah and it gives family and friends a chance to celebrate
Where do Christian weddings usually take place?
In a church or a chapel. This is because these places are seen as sacred and as the house of God.
What do the vows in Christian weddings show?
A promise and deep commitment made between the bride and the groom e.g standing by each other in a time of poor health
What do rings symbolise for Christians?
The lifelong commitment and love for one another
What do most Christians believe about sex before marriage?
That it’s not allowed
What does the Catholic Church believe about sex before marriage?
That only married couples should have sex and that the most important reason for sex is to have children. There should be a chance of getting pregnant with every act of sex
What is sex before marriage called in Christianity?
Fornication, which is a sin
