Theme A Flashcards
Catholic beliefs against female ordination
- Jesus was a man “in persona Christi” should be performed by a man
- Men and women are different- they think women should stay at home and that men should be priests
- Jesus had male disciples- Jesus chose men to do his work so priests in the church should be men
Weakness of female ordination
- breaks tradition of male leadership
-some may think too many women will join church leadership roles and there will be no one to raise children
Church of England beliefs FOR female ordination
- Men and women are equal- they were created equally by god and therefore should have the same rights
- Story of adulterous woman- “I do not condemn you either. Go but do not sin again” a Christian would think this means do not treat other differently because if their gender
- It’s the Church’s responsibility to tackle discrimination in society - everyone should be treated with equality
Strength of female ordination
-much more modern view - more appealing to people and fits with society’s values
- 50% of population are women so this is more representative of society and the Church should reflect the society it serves
- more closely aligned with the actions of Jesus. Jesus= god incarnate - we want to follow his actions
Against same sex marriage Catholics
-can’t procreate which is a direct command from god “Go forth and multiply”
-follows tradition, Adam and Eve were man and woman created by God, they are a representation of what all couples should look like
For same-sex marriage Quakers
-form of a family or relationship is unimportant, as long as it’s loving and caring it’s okay
-more accepting in our modern world today
2 beliefs about pre-marital sex
- CofE: the purpose of sex is procreation and the best place to raise children is within a stable marriage but it is not always wrong as they accept that there are many different types of families and no form is better than the other
-Catholics: think it is always wrong and procreation and sex should only happen within marriage
