Theme 4 Designing nutrition programmes Flashcards
What are nutrition-specific interventions?
Interventions that address the immediate determinants of fetal and child nutrition
What are the two approaches of nutrition-specific interventions?
Medical approach (supplementation) Food-based approach (breastfeeding and fortification)
Is there evidence for dietary diversification interventions to work?
No, not really, but we should not abandon them because it also creates income and provides micronutrients and fibre
What is targeted fortification?
Targeted at a specific group (elderly)
What is mass fortification?
Fortification of the whole population (flour and salt)
What is market-driven fortification?
For example breakfast cereals because people want it more
What are the benefits of biofortification?
Cheap
Sustainable
Low risk for consumer health
Complements traditional interventions
What are nutrition-sensitive interventions?
Interventions to affect the basic or underlying causes of malnutrition
Why does a higher income not always result in improvements in nutrition?
Caring practices are not linked with income
Food environment might not change (access, desirablity)
Men might control the income
What are four pathways by which a nutrition-sensitive intervention can work?
Consumption pathway (biofortification)
Income pathway
Women empowerment pathway
Health
Nutrition sensitive agricultural interventions, what do they do?
Improve the diet, and should focus on all household members, context is important
What is the effect of social safety nets in nutrition-sensitive interventions?
People come to healthcare facilities more, but child nutrition is not improved
What is the effect of WASH interventions?
No enhancement in stunting, lack of improvement in diarrhoea, not abandon yet (also no evidence that it doesn’t work)
How can you enhance the effect of nutrition-sensitive programmes?
Improve targetting
Strengthen goals
Optimize women’s epowerment
