Explain the act of vagabonds
-Est. by Queen Elizabeth in 1572
-persons were put in charge of actors still performing when the pageant wagon was banned
-this created protection and organization
Explain the master of revels
-Est. by Queen Elizabeth in her court
-they would: give a license for the play, say when you could perform it, get 7 shillings for every play licensed and stop th play if there was a plague
What were the two major theatre groups in London at the time

How were the theatre companies organised?
They were organized on a stock-holding profit system; to be involved in the company you could buy stocks and based on the audience you could gain a profit
Who is Christopher Malowe?
-Playwright, poet, translator

-Known for creating Faustus and writing Tamburlaine; The Great Plays
What are foul papers?
Pages and sides written for each character by the playwright. It was the most valuable since it was the original copy
What is fair copy ?
Final corrected (not necessarily entirely correct) manuscript such as a dramatist might submit to a theatre company
What is the book of the play ?
Document of all of the information somebody would write. It was kept instead of the foul papers
Explain the first folio
-1683
-Shakespeare’s first publication after he died
-Comprised of tragedies, comedies, sonnets, poems, romances, histories etc
-The last play written what’s the Tempest
What were the sharers responsible for?
Purchasing plays, getting male actors and building theatres
How and why were the puritans against theatre?
They encouraged young men to portray themselves as women (homosexuality)
What does renaissance mean?
- The revival of European art and literature under the influence of classical models in the 14th and 16th centuries
- the reviewed interest in something
Explain humanism in the Renaissance period
An intellectual movement typified by a revived interest in the classical world and studies which focused not only on religion but on what it is to be human
What was Italy’s contribution to the theatre?
Teatro Olimpico is a theatre in Vicenza, northern Italy, constructed in 1580–1585. The theatre was the final design by the Italian Renaissance architect Andrea Palladio and was not completed until after his death.
Explain the staging styles and how it was done
There was a wing and groove system; different sceneries was put on the wings to pull out for certain types of plays; columns were used for tragedy, houses for comedy and landscapes for romance; this style stayed until the modern period in 1850
