THEATRE DESIGN Flashcards
What is an OR/ theatre?
An operating room (OR), also known as surgery center, is the unit of a hospital where surgical procedures are performed.
OR is within the theatre
Theatre is a demarcated area with planned and controlled access
The planning of an operating theatre department of a hospital requires a detailed understanding of staff work flows and patients’ movement.
In an era of rising costs and declining reimbursement, it is essential to optimize the effectiveness of the operating room suite.
What should The Operating Room look like?
- The size and room dimensions vary but as an indication it should be about 7 meters wide by 8 meters long (56 square meters).
- Circular is ideal ( making it easier to clean due to the lack of corners), but inefficient. Most OP rooms are square or nearly so.
- Wall height should be least 3m
- No complex manoeuvres!!!!
Theatre floor
The Floor
Floor of impervious material without interstices. Floor area of not less than 30m2 …..but 45m2– 58m2 is recommended ( 484sq ft – 625 sq ft).
Wall covering and floor covering should be joined in a continuous smooth surface without interstices
Only “anti-static” (conductive) rubber and cotton surfaces should be permitted in operating theatres
What are the Principles of Theatre Design?
All aimed at making the OR
The most sterile
Flexibility of use of space
Ease of Cleaning
Ease of use of Surgeon’s Panels, Theatre lights and pendants
Emphasis on Patient, Materials and Staffing flows
Integration of Support Resources
Consideration for future growth, market expansion and surgical discipline-specific facility requirements
The Basic Millieu of an Operating Room
Light: artificial, wall mounted, spectrum similar to daylight
Temperature: 22-24⁰C, avoid hypothermia in babies
Humidity: 50-60%
Ventilation: PPV, Laminar flow, 400 air changes per hour recommended
