the working memory model Flashcards
who proposed the WMM
-baddeley and hitch
what did Baddeley and hitch believe
-the MSM was too simplistic
-focused on the STM only and believed it was not a unitary store like the MSM
what were the 4 components of the WMM
-central executive
-visuo-spatial pad
-phonological loop
-episodic buffer
what are the two parts of the phonological loop
-articulatory control system
-phonological store
capacity of the central executive
-limited
-derives data from senses but cannot be held for long
-no capacity for storing data
what does the central executive do
-attention, reasoning and decision making
-determine at any time how brains resources (slave systems) are allocated to tasks
capacity of the phonological loop
-limited capacity
what information does the phonological loop deal with
-auditory information
what was the phonological loop subdivided into
-phonological store
-articulatory processes
whats does the phonological store do
-holds the words u hear (like inner ear)
whats does articulatory process do
-process which is used for words that are heard/seen
-words r silently repeated like an !inner voice! (maintenance rehearsal)
what information is stored in the visuo-spatial sketchpad
-visual and/ or spatial information
whats visual information (visuo-spatial sketchpad)
what things look like
-like imagine how many windows in ur house
whats spatial information (visuo-spatial sketchpad)
-the physical relationship between things
capacity of the visuo-spatial sketchpad
-limited to 3/4 objects
what was the suggested subdivision of the visuo-spatial sketchpad
-the visuo-cache which stores info about visual items (colour)
-inner scribe (stores arrangement of objects in the visual field)
when may the visuo-spatial sketchpad be useful?
-driving
-navigation
who proposed further subdivisions of the visuo-spatial sketchpad
-Logie (1995)
whats does the episodic buffer do/what is it
-a more general store
-its an extra storage system with limited capacity of 4 chunks
-integrates information for all other STM stores
-maintains a sense of time sequencing
-sends info to the LTM
why did Baddeley and hitch think that the STM was a number of different stores
-if u do 2 things at the same time and they’re both visual tasks u perform them less well than separately
-if u do 2 things at the same time and ones visual whereas the other is acoustic then there is no interference
-suggests two separate stores
what does the phonological loop do
-deals w auditory information
-preserves the order of information
when is the visuo-spatial sketchpad used
-when u have to plan a spatial task
-like getting from one room to another
