the working memory model Flashcards

1
Q

strength:it has had a real life application in education

A

E:within education it has been acknowledged that working memory has a limited capacity meaning a learner is only able to store a small amount of information at a time
E:now , educators are encouraged to reduce cognitive load within their lessons. e.g.teachers should be aware that attempting to lecture their students whilst presenting a verbal and visual information will overlap their students visa-spatial sketchpad , meaning they will be unawake to absorb all information. teachers should also be aware that heavy cognitive load may be difficult for students with working memory deficits [such as dyslexia]
L:therefore the working memory model can be used practically

Q

limitation:falls victim to the homunculus argument

A

E:a homunculus argument is a fallacy that attempts to explain one concept in terms of another concept without explaining how the new concept works
E:many people (even baddeley) recognised that the central executive resembles a homunculus. it may be the control system for WM but there is no was of explaining how the central executive directs the other slave systems(there becomes a threat of infinite regress )
L:therefore the workings of the central executive cannot be directly explained.
