LTM Flashcards
strength:it challenges the multi-store model of memory
E:the MSM states that long term memory represents a single(unitary) store
E:tulving is the first psychologist to challenge the simple single sore model to show long term memory because his theory proposes a tripartite system(three components). however tulvins theory fails to completely challenge the multi store model therefore his work is seen as an elaboration of previous theories.
L:therefore tulvings theory has helped with the understanding of long term memory and has aided in developing other theoretical models.
Limitation:tulvings account of semantic and episodic memory may be incorrect
E: Cohen and squires state that Long term memory should be categorised in two separate systems : declarative[memories are consciously recalled]and non-declarative[memories cannot be consciously recalled]
E:this challenges tulvings theory of LTM because he proposes that episodic and semantic memories are separate systems , however because both systems are declarative ,cohn and squires suggest they are part of the same declarative system therefore tulving is wrong to separate episodic and semantic memories. Cohn and squires claim is strengthened as people with anterograde amnesia experience impairments of both their semantic and episodic memories which suggests that these memories are part of a single system. there is still an ongoing debate on the extent to which semantic and episodic memories are entirely separate.
L:overall, there are objections to tulvings claim that semantic and episodic memories are separate but it is not yet proven incorrect.
