cognitive interviews Flashcards

1
Q

limitation:difficult to implement

A

E:the main issue with this method is time because the cognitive interview requires significant time to training officers in administrating it and unlike standard interviews, there are techniques used.
E:these techniques mean that these practices might be hard to actually use in real life situations regarding eyewitness testimonies.this extra time is demanded of policing departments and therefore may not be a good method for improving eyewitness testimonies.
L:overall, cognitive interviews may be a good theoretical tool for improving ewt. however unless it becomes easier to imminent, this method is essentially unhelpful to investigators.

Q

limitation:has mixed success with different age groups

A

E:some researchers have found that in very little children under the age of 6 , recall of events was slightly less actuate, this could possible be because they were unable to comprehend the complexity of the instructions provided as part of the cognitive interview. whereas other research has revealed the effctiveness of the cognitive interview within the elderly age group.
E:this implies that individual differences affect the extent to which the cognitive interview improves eyewitness testimonies. this also means that the police department should consider delivering the cognate interview is a more targeted way.
L:therefore, the cognitive interview is limited as it does not improve eyewitness testimony for all demographic groups.
