SUBSTITUTION
In the place of another
- Christ’s death was in the place of sinners
REDEMPTION
To buy back or out of
- Christ bought us out of God’s coming judgment and our own slavery to sin
PROPITIATION
To appease anger, to turn aside wrath (satisfy)
RECONCILIATION
To bring peace between two warring parties
ATONEMENT
To purge or to cleanse
Problem in the OT
- OT saints were ceremonially cleansed
- The sacrificial system pointed to its own shortcomings, and God made it that way
What is “Penal Substitutionary Atonement”?
There was a penalty
1. Christ suffered in our place to make us clean and holy
2. We were expected to pay the consequences of our sin, He did it instead
Personal Atonement
- Done by the offender
- A matter of strict justice
- Takes all of eternity to pay
- Never feels fully clean/free from guilt
Substitutionary Atonement
- Done by the offended
- Combines justice with grace
- A once and for all sacrifice
- Accept by faith that we are clean
