The WMM Flashcards
What are the components of the WMM
- Central executive (CE)
- Visuospatial sketchpad (VSS)
- Episodic buffer
- Phonological loop (PL)
What is the function of the CE?
- Supervisory role
- Monitors all incoming data
- Data allocated to 1 of 3 slave systems
- Does not store info
- Responsible for problem solving and decision making
What is the capacity of the CE?
- very limited
- cannot attend to many things at once
How does the CE code?
Modality free
What is the VSS divided into?
- visual cache
- inner scribe
What is the function of the visual cache?
Temporarily stores visual data
What is the function of the inner scribe?
Provides a rehearsal mechanism by recording a visual field
What is the capacity of the VSS?
- limited capacity
- 3-4 objects
How does the VSS code?
Visually
What is the function of the episodic buffer?
- added in 2000
- temporary store for information received by the CE
- integrated visual, spatial and verbal information + maintains a sense of time sequencing
- links working memory to LTM
What is the capacity of the episodic buffer?
Capacity of 4 ‘chunks’
How does the episodic buffer code?
Modality free
What is the PL divided into?
- phonological store
- articulatory process
What is the function of the phonological store?
Understands and stores sounds we hear
What is the function of the articulatory process?
Verbal rehearsal used to rehearse words seen or heard
