The West Flashcards
Transcontinental Railroad
A railroad the spans the entire continent, from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.
Reservation
A place where Native Americans were sent to live
Ghost Dance
A ceremonial dance led by Sitting Bull. In the dances the Native Americans wished that the settlers would go away and their life would go back to normal.
Wounded Knee
U.S. Government officials tried to arrest Sitting Bull because he led the Ghost Dance. Sitting Bull refused, and shots were fired killing Sitting Bull.
Sand Creek
In eastern Colorado, John Chivington and his volunteers massacred a village of Chayenne.
Little Bighorn
The U.S. tried forcing Native Americans on reservations, and the Native Americans refused. Sitting Bull, Crazy horse, and other Sioux and Chayenne warriors gathered at the Little Bighorn river, where they were attacked by Colonel George Armstrong Custer and the 7th cavalry. The Native Americans easily won the battle because of their superior numbers.
Fred Harvey
created the Harvey House, which was a chain of restaurants and hotels located at or near trains and train stations.
The Homestead Act
offered 160 acres of land to a family for $10, but the family had to farm the land for five years. This increased the population in the midwest.
Cattle Drives
Cattle drives were when ranchers and cowboys herded cattle north to railroad lines such as Abilene, Kansas, and they followed trails that averaged 750 miles for 30-40 days. The cattle would then be shipped by train to the east, where the cattle was worth much more. These drives ended because railroad lines extended into Texas, the Texas cattle brought disease and ticks that infected the Kansas cattle, and farmers that lived on the trails built fences around their land so that cattle could not walk through the land.
Effects of Railroads on the Country
Native Americans relocated, landscape changes, cattle industry grows, western settlement increases, more territories gain statehood, Harvey Houses, increase in the amount of available jobs (i.e. working on the railroad), travel becomes easier and faster, conflict with Native Americans, development of the western part of the US
