the Republican candidate that won the Election of 1876 because he made a compromise with the south to take away soldiers for votes. This got him president, but it ended Reconstruction
Andrew Johnson
he was Abraham Lincoln’s vice president and took over office when Lincoln was killed. Johnson’s Reconstruction plan gave amnesty to the southerners who were loyal to the Union and the Confederate leaders were forced to appeal. The states had to abolish slaver.
Amnesty
Forgiveness to any crimes committed. Especially for large numbers of people.
Black codes
laws passed in the South just after the Civil War aimed at controlling freed men and women, and allowing plantation owners to take advantage of African American workers.
Segregation
The separation of different races
Sharecropper
the person that farms the land from the landowner in sharecropping
Impeach
to formally charge a public official with misconduct in office
Thirteenth ammendment
abolished slavery
Fourteenth ammendment
gave African Americans citizenship, and equally protected all citizens
Fifteenth ammendment
gave voting rights to African American men
Grandfather clause
a device that allowed a person to vote if their father or grandfather had voted before Reconstruction
Jim Crow legislation
laws that segragate whites and blacks in almost all public places
Plessy v. Furgeson
a court case about a Louisiana law that required separate sections on a train for African Americans and whites. The Court ruled that segregation was legal as long as African Americans had access to public places equal to those of whites.
