James Lane
was one of Kansas’ first U.S. senators and was against slavery. Shortly after moving to Washington D.C., the Civil War began and there was fighting on the streets of Washington. Lane made many speeches that helped defend the capital. Lane also organized a group of 100 Kansas men to protect President Lincoln.
John Brown
a northern abolitionist that used violence and anything else it took to convince many people to put an end to slavery.
Abraham Lincoln
became president of the United States, Republican, during the events leading to the Civil War. He wanted to make the nation a whole again. He did not want to disban slavery because he feared that states would secede the Union. Lincoln created many compromises to make repair the United States.
Bleeding Kansas
The fight over slavey in Kansas led to many violent eruptions which got national attention. 50 people were killed and many lost property.
Compromise of 1850
California was admitted as a free state, but other territories would have no limits on slavery, there would be no slave trade in Washington DC, fugitive slave act
Dred Scott v. Standford
a court case that went to the Supreme Court. A slave, Dred Scott, sued Sandfor for his freedom. The court found that all slaves were property, even if they lived on free soil. This meant that they could not sue. Also, the Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional for the U.S. Government to prohibit slavery in the territories.
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Stephen A. Douglas organized the land west of Missouri– Kansas and Nebraska. Both of these states would be anti-slavery states because of the Missouri Compromise. To satisfy the South, Douglas proposed popular sovereignty. This meant that the citizens of Kansas and Nebraska would vote anti-slavery or pro-slavery. This angered many abolitionists because it gave Kansas a chance of become proslavery, when it should definitely be anti-slavery.
Raid on Harpers Ferry
John Brown led a raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia to steal the arsenal. Brown would then give the weapons to slaves to revolt against slaveholders.
Border Ruffian
Missourians that jumped the Kansas-Missouri border and illegally voted for slavery in Kansas.
Fort Sumter
First shots of the Civil War occured here on April 12, 1861. This happened because the southern states started to secede, and the Union tried to control Fort Sumter.
