The Walleye Flashcards
Seeing The Forests For The Trees
Annual temperatures have warmed by 1.6 degrees Celsius
Some species will experience gains, some will experience losses
We are experiencing storms once a decade that we
would expect only once a century
Moose, birds, and cold water fish species have already seen significant impacts in northern Ontario
Maddening for Moose
Over the past decade , many local hunters and naturalists have reported a noticeable decline in moose numbers
In Minnesota, researchers have found almost half the adult moose population is dying from brain-worm
With warmer, shorter winters anticipated for northern Ontario deer are expected to move further north and overlap further with moose causing greater potential for the transmission of brain-worm and other parasites
Birds
Climate change is affecting birds, both in declining numbers and shifting ranges
We are now seeing red-bellied woodpeckers in Thunder Bay District
Our winters have been milder over the past 10-15 years
Populations of sandhill crane have exploded through
the Slate River Valley
Early buds on trees coupled with late killing frost can significantly deplete known food sources
Fish
Climate change poses a threat to freshwater •ecosystems in Boreal region, and is expected to affect ice cover, water temperatures, total water volume and water quality in lakes and rivers
Taking Action
Climate change is happening, human activities are causing it, limiting our greenhouse gas emission to zero by end of this century may be required to avoid the worst impacts.
Boreal forest zone is expected to shrink, reducing habitat for species that rely on these forests
We must limit global warming to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius
December 2015, nearly 200 countries agreed to Paris
Agreement to set ambitious targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Key Facts
southern boundary of Canada’s boreal forest will likely shift 150-200 km to north
Canada’s forests make up 10% of world’s forest cover
84% of the carbon in boreal forests is in soils
Across entire North American boreal region, total
