Mining Industries Flashcards
Four mining issues
negative impact on the environment (ex. acid rain kills forests)
abandoned mines (leaves scars on the earth’s surface and can be dangerous)
loss of jobs
exhausting the supply (when mines run out so do the jobs)
What is Underground Mining?
mining that is done completely underground, this type of mining is much more dangerous due to cave-ins
What is Open Pit Mining?
this method is used when the deposit is close enough to the surface for mass removal of ore to be economically viable
Where is the “Ring of Fire” located?
mineral-rich James Bay Lowlands of Northern Ontario.
What is the area known for?
a massive planned chromite mining and smelting development project.
Useful in making stainless steel – as well as zinc, nickel, copper and gold
How much money is the development expected to generate?
$60 billion
What are some of the challenges facing the development?
First Nations land rights, and environmental issues in the James Bay Lowlands.
