Q

Clinical manifestations, laboratory findings, treatment and outcome of acute organophosphate or carbamate intoxication in 39 cats. Klainbart et al. 2022

A
  • Mortality in intoxicated cats was 15%.
  • Low respiratory rate and low rectal temperature at presentation were associated with death.
-biochemical abnormalities included decreased serum butyryl-choline esterase activity, acidaemia, hypercarbaemia and total hypocalcaemia, and increased creatine kinase activity and total plasma protein
-The secondary complications of the intoxication included pneumonia (10%), acute kidney injury (10%) and pancreatitis (8%).
  • No specific treatment changed survival

Q

Thoracic to lumbar vertebral column length and length ratios in miniature dachshunds with and without thoracolumbar intervertebral disc extrusion. Fletcher et al. 2023

A

The thoracic to lumbar vertebral column length ratio and absolute thoracic vertebral column length were significantly smaller in miniature dachshunds with IVDE than in those without IVDE (p < 0.0001 for both). There were no significant differences in lumbar vertebral column length, age, sex or neuter status between the two groups.

Q

Complications associated with CSF collection in dogs. Fentem et al. 2023

A

-CSF sampling was attempted on 108 occasions, and CSF was acquired on 100 occasions (92.6%).
-Collection from the CMC was more likely to be successful than that from the LSAS.
- No dogs exhibited neurologic deterioration following CSF collection. - There was no significant difference between pre- and post-CSF collection short-form Glasgow composite measure pain scores in ambulatory dogs (p = 0.13).

Q

Incidence and clinical characterisation of TL IVDE in Basset Hounds compared with Dachshunds. Thatcher et al. 2024

A

The study found that only 36.2% of Basset Hounds compared with 77.4% of Dachshunds had presented with IVDE.
Basset Hounds were older (median 87.5 months), compared with Dachshunds (66.5 months).
They also had a greater proportion of midlumbar[iii] IVDE and were more frequently ambulatory at discharge than Dachshunds.

Q

Bacterial meningitis secondary to otogenic infection in 10 French Bulldogs: A retrospective study. Butterfield et al. 2023

A
  • Dogs presented with acute onset (median 2 days), progressive history of vestibular signs and/or intra-oral or cervical pain.
  • 50% concurrent otitis externa.
  • MRI = material within the tympanic bulla with adjacent meningeal enhancement.
  • CSF pleocytosis in 80%, intracellular bacteria seen in 30% with positive bacteriological culture in 20% dogs.
  • Nine remaining dogs received antimicrobial therapy and six underwent surgical management.
  • 3 dogs treated surgically were neurologically normal within 2 weeks
  • Two dogs treated medically improved and one had complete resolution reported within a 4-week follow-up period.

Q

Neurological adverse effects of isoxazoline exposure in cats and dogs. Bates et al. 2024

A
  • Toxin mostly with fluralaner or sarolaner.
  • Both groups, muscle tremors and convulsions were the most common signs.
-In dogs, neurological signs occurred with oral therapeutic dose and overdosage.
  • In cats, most fluralaner cases involved therapeutic topical exposure, and all sarolaner cases involved oral exposure.
  • The delay between the administration and onset of signs can be long, and the association may be missed.
