The Ventricular System Flashcards
What is the ventricular system
The ventricular system is a series of spaces in within the CNS which produces and allows circulation of the CSF
Name some functions of CSF
High glucose concentration for metabolic activity
Helps cushion the brain and spinal cord within their bony cases
Helps hold the brain up within the skull and prevent it collapsing
What produces CSF
The choroid plexus
What structures make up the ventricular system (not including the drainage)
Two lateral ventricles
Interventricular foramen
Third ventricle
Aqueduct of midbrain
Fourth ventricle
What structures does the fourth ventricle drain from/into
Central canal
Foramen of Luschka (lateral) - drain into subarachnoid space
Foramen of Magendie (midline) - drains into the subarachnoid space
Where is CSF reabsorbed
CSF is reabsorbed by arachnoid granulations where it enters dural venous sinuses from the subarachnoid space and then enters the venous blood
