Blood Supply to Brain Flashcards
What are the two parts of the Circle of Wilis
Circle of Wilis is formed from anterior circulation and posterior circulation
What arteries form the anterior circulation
Middle cerebral artery
Anterior cerebral artery
These arteries are supplied by the internal carotid artery
What arteries form the posterior circulation
Basilar artery
Vertebral arteries
Posterior cerebral arteries
Superior cerebellar arteries
Pontine arteries
Anterior inferior cerebellar arteries
Anterior spinal arteries
Posterior inferior cerebellar arteries
What parts of the brain does the middle cerebral artery supply and what branches does it give off
MCA supplies:
Lateral parts of frontal and parietal lobe
Superior temporal lobe
Gives off lenticulostriate arteries which supply basal ganglia and interal capsule
MCA terminates by bifurcating into superior and inferior branches
What artery connects the left and right anterior cerebral arteries
Anterior communicating artery connects the left and right anterior cerebral arteries
What parts of the brain does the anterior cerebral artery supply
Cortical branches supply the medial aspect of the frontal and paritel lobes
Sends branches to corpus callosum
What areas of the body are affected if the MCA is occluded and what areas are affected if the ACA is occluded
MCA occlusion affects face and upper limbs
ACA occlusions affects lower leg and foot
What areas of the brain do the posterior cerebral arteries supply
Occipital lobe, inferior temporal lobe and thalamus
Supplies midbrain in passing
Thalamus via thalamoperforator and thalamogeniculate branches
How are the anterior and posterior circulations connected
Posterior communicating arteries connect the anterior and posterior circulations
Posterior communicating arteries branch off of posterior cerebral
What does the superior cerebellar artery supply
Superior cerebellar artery supplies superior aspect of the cerebellum
Supplies midbrain in passing
What do the pontine arteries supply
Pontine arteries supply the pons and descending corticospinal fibres
What area do the anterior inferior cerebrellar arteries supply
Anterior cerebellar arteries supply the anteroinferior aspect of the cerebellum
Supplies lateral pons in passing
What does the anterior spinal arteries supply
Anterior spinal arteries supply the anterior 2/3 of the spinal cord
What do the posterior inferior cerebellar arteries supply
Posterior inferior cerebellar arteries supply posteroinferior aspect of the cerebellum
What arteries branch off of the basilar artery
Posterior cerebral
Superior cerebellar
Pontine
Anterior inferior cerebellar
