the use of finishes Flashcards
fabric finishes
fabrics need to be fit for their intended use and meet consumers expectations. it’s possible to cancel out fabrics disadvantages by applying finishes
mechanical finishes
brushing - used on cotton /polyester to make it softer and warmer
calendering - uses heat pressure to smooth the fabric surfaces
embossing - ironing a pattern which can be washed out
heat setting - enables a range of functional and aesthetics
chemical finishes
flame retardency - make flammable fabrics less reactive e.g proban is a type of finish
water resistance - prevents waterborne stains and protect fabrics from rain and water
non iron / crease resistance - make fabrics easy care and add convenience
shrink resistant - resins enter the fibres as small molecules and are joined together within the fibres by curing process
laminating as a finishing process
laminated fabric is made up of two or more layers that are very thin and held together with an adhesive
gore tex - typically water proof and wind proof (perfect for outside coat clothing use/breathable)
enhancement of materials
to add extra special features onto the garment to differentiate and enhance the aestethic, allow brands to charge a premium price
- dyeing
- printing
- embroidery
- quilting (mattresses)
