health and safety at work act
(1974) was passed to protect employees from hazards in the workplace, makes employers criminally liable for failures to meet the regulations. the act requires businesses to make a risk assessment for their activities to identify possible dangers and make sure that everyone can work safely

hazard
an unsafe woking practise or process
ppe
personal protective equipment e.g aprons, safety goggles, helmets
COSHH
control - of - substances - hazardous - to - health
the law that requires employers to control substances that are hazardous to health. you can prevent or reduce workers exposure to them by doing risk assessments
HSC + HSE
health and safety commission / executive
commission - focuses on preventing injury at the worplace to ensure individuals are not putting eachother at risk
executive - responsible for the encouragement of regulation and enforcement of workplace safety
BSI
british standards institute - standards that are accepted uk guidelines for industry and commerce, often similar in other countries
often sets strict guidelines about how tests are set up and conducted. regularly test samples of a range of products to see if they meet standards and requirements
health risks in textiles (processes/activities)
- boutique: hot wax (burns)
- dyeing/bleaching: harsh chemicals (corrosive)
- winding the bobbin: hair getting caught
safety in products and services to the customer
textile products must be safe for the consumer to use, and must comply with a range of safety standards and specifications
consumer rights
the act of 2015 which replaces the sales of goods act (1979). if goods don’t meet criteria, the purchaser has legal rights to reject them and get a full refund - as long as they return within 30 days. the consumer can ask for the product to be fixed and repaired or replaced. criteria includes:
- good must match samples shown
- satisfactory quality
- fit for purpose
