The Urinary System Flashcards
What is the urinary systems function?
It’s function is to filtrate and purify the blood and help waste leave the body as urine.
Where does filtration occur?
It occurs in the kidneys, which are incased in protective fibrous capsules and surround by perirenal fat.
What are the renal arteries pathway to the inferior vena cava?
They are branches of the abdominal aorta and the renal veins will drain into the inferior vena cava.
What does the renal hilum carry?
It carries the renal arteries, veins and where the ureter is located.
How does urine leave the body?
Through the renal sinuses, minor calyx, major calyx joining to form the renal pelvis, to the ureters to the bladder to the urethra.
What is the voluntary/involuntary controls of the urinary system?
The involuntary control is the internal urinal sphinter and the voluntary is the external urinal sphinter.
What is the outer area of the kidney called?
It is called the renal cortex which is superficial, then the renal pyramids forming the renal medulla and renal columns.
What is a nephron?
A nephron is the urinary systems (kidneys) functional unit.
What are the nephron branches and it’s pathway?
It branches to the glomerulus, inside the bowman’s capsule, to the proximal convoluted tubule to the descending limb to the ascending limb to the distal convoluted tubule and collecting duct.
What is the function of the glomerulus?
It will dump a lot of the bloods contents into the glomerular capsule.
Where do renal arteries branch?
They branch into afferent arterioles, to the glomerular capsule branching the glomerulus leaving through the efferent arteriole.
What are the peritubule capillaries?
They pass O2 and nutrients to the cells and kidneys.
Where does the venus system start?
Past the distal convoluted tubule to the renal vein going back to the inferior vena cava.
