The Urinary System Flashcards
Bean-shaped organs that filter nitrogenous wastes from the bloodstream to form urine.
Kidney
A blood vessel that carries blood (oxygenated blood) to the kidneys.
Renal artery
A blood vessel that carries blood (deoxygenated blood) away from the kidney.
Renal vein
The functional unit of the kidney
Nephron
A capsule surrounding a glomerulus and serving as a collection site for urine.
Bowman’s capsule
A group of capillaries in a nephron
Glomerulus
(plural: glomeruli
Microscopic tubes in the kidney where urine is formed after filtration.
Renal tubules
Process of separating solids from liquid by passing them through a porous substance
Filtration
A process of returning essential elements to the bloodstream.
Reabsorption
An organ where urine collects before being excreted from the body.
Bladder
A tube used for injecting or removing fluids.
Catheter
A chemical element that carries an electrical charge when dissolved in water.
Electrolyte
A waste product of nitrogen metabolism. Usually excreted in normal adult’s urine.
Urea
Fluid excreted by the urinary system
Urine
A nitrogenous waste excreted in the urine.
Creatinine
An enzyme produced in the kidneys to regulate filtration rate of the blood by increasing the blood pressure.
