The Endocrine System Flashcards
Type of glands secretes hormones into specific ducts (outside the bloodstream)
Exocrine glands
Type of glands secretes its hormones directly into the bloodstream (not into ducts)
Endocrine glands
Hormone secreted by the parathyroid glands to help in raising blood calcium levels
PTH
(Parathyroid Hormone)
Hormone released from the anterior pituitary glands to aid in production of gametes (ova and sperm cells).
FSH (Folliclestimulating Hormone)
Hormone released from the anterior pituitary gland to aid in increasing progesterone levels and stimulation of oocyte maturation
LH (Luteinizing Hormone)
Hormone released from the anterior pituitary gland to aid in milk production
PRL/LTH
(Prolactin/Lacto genic Hormone
Homone released by the anterior pituitary gland to control the production of another hormone called cortisol (from the adrenal cortex) which plays a role in response to stress.
ACTH
(Adrenocortico tropic Hormone)
Hormone released by the anterior pituitary gland for stimulating growth
GH
(Growth Hormone or somatotropic hormone)
Hormon responsible for production of melanin pigment (provide pigmentation to hair , skin and eyes).
MSH
(Melanocyte Stimulating Hormone)
Hormone Secreted by the adrenal cortex of adrenal glands and regulates sodium reabsorption (↑) and potassium excretion (↑) by the kidneys
ALD (Aldosterone)
Hormone Synthesized in hypothalamus and secreted by the posterior pituitary gland to aid in uterine contractions (during labor) and lactation
OXT (Oxytocin)
Hormone secreted by the thyroid gland to stimulate growth, (consisted of 3 iodine molecules)
T3
(Triiodothyronine)
Hormone secreted by the thyroid gland and helps in regulating body metabolism (consisted of 4 iodine molecules)
T4 (thyroxine)
Thyr(o), thyroid(o)
Thyroid gland
Adren(o), adrenal(o)
Adrenal glands
