The Nervous System Flashcards
A body organ responsible for controlling body functions and interactions with external and internal stimuli.
Brain
Brain division involved with emotions, memory, conscious thought, and moral behavior
Cerebrum
Brain division that coordinates musculoskeletal movement.
Cerebellum
A bony structure where the brain sits in
Cranium
A brain division that controls certain heart, lung, and visual functions.
Brain stem
(A part of the brain stem that is involved in visual reflexes).
Midbrain
A part of brain stem that regulates heart and lung functions, swallowing, vomiting, and coughing
Medulla oblongata
Any of the 12 pairs of nerves that carry impulses from and to brain.
Cranial nerves
A ropelike tissue that sits inside the vertebral column and the site from which spinal nerves extend.
Spinal cord
A part of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) that operates when the body is under stressful situations
Sympathetic nervous system
A part of the autonomic nervous system that operates when the body is in a normal state (resting).
Parasympathetic nervous system
A bundle of neurons that transmit electrical messages to organs and muscles of the body
Nerve
A junction between nerve cells.
Synapse
Various substances (chemical agents) located in tiny sacs at end of axon
Neurotransmitters
Tissue or an organ that receives the nerve impulse
