The Digestive System Flashcards
Ingestion:
swallowing food
Breaking down large food particles into small molecules in order to be easily absorbed.
Digestion
Movement of nutrients from the GIT to blood in order for the body to benefit from food.
Absorption
movement of undigested materials to the outside of the body through defecation process.
Elimination
The simplest building blocks of proteins, released when proteins are digested.
Amino acids
Glycogen
Starch
Mastication
Chewing.
A fluid secreted by salivary glands which contains amylase that is important in breakdown of starch
Saliva
A specialized protein that causes chemical changes in substances in the digestive tract.
Enzyme
An enzyme secreted by pancreas and salivary glands to digest starch
Amylase
Coordinated, rhythmic contractions of smooth muscles through the digestive tract
Peristalsis
A large sac between esophagus and small intestine where food is broken down.
Stomach
An acid produced by stomach that is necessary for digestion of food (mainly proteins).
Hydrochloric acid (HCL)
A digestive enzyme in the gastric juice
Pepsin
An organ that is important in digestion, metabolism, and bile production.
Liver
A yellowish-brown to greenish fluid secreted by the liver and stored in the gallbladder and aids in fat digestion.
Bile
A yellow pigment contained in bile.
Bilirubin
Bowel
Intestine.
Small sac under the liver where bile is stored.
Gallbladder
A long tube that continues the process of digestion that started in the stomach, it’s the place where most of absorption process takes place (90%)
Small intestine
A digestive organ that secretes digestive fluids into the small intestine.
Pancreas
An enzyme contained in pancreatic juice that is specialized in lipid breakdown
Lipase
