How was the Church of England established?
Henry VIII asked the Pope for permission to divorce his first wife. When the Pope refused, Henry established his own Church.
What was the Reformation?
The Reformation was a movement across Europe against the authority of the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church.
When did the Protestants form their own churches?
The Protestants formed churches during the Reformation.
What happened in Ireland during the Reformation?
The English tried to impose Protestantism, English laws and land inheritance on the Irish. This led to brutal fighting.
What happened in Wales during the reign of Henry VIII?
Wales was united with England under Henry VIII’s rule. Wales sent representatives to the House of Commons and the Welsh legal system was reformed.
Why was Queen Elizabeth I popular?
Queen Elizabeth I was popular because she created peace between the Protestants and Catholics.
What happened in Scotland during the Reformation?
In Scotland during the Reformation, a Protestant parliament abolished the authority of the Pope and made Roman Catholic services illegal.
What was the Elizabethan period?
The Elizabethan period was a time of patriotism: people felt proud to be English, sought new trade routes and the beginning of colonisation. This period is also known for its poetry and drama including William Shakespeare.

Puritans are English Protestants.
What and when was the English Civil War?
The English Civil War began when Roman Catholics in Ireland feared Protestant (Puritan) power. Parliament took this opportunity to take control of the English army. King Charles I tried to arrest members of Parliament for taking the army. In 1642, a civil war broke out.

By 1646, Parliament won the English Civil War.
What happened after Parliament won the English Civil War?
England declared itself a republic, called the Commonwealth. It no longer had a monarch.
When was the monarch restored in England?
The monarch was restored in 1660 when King Charles II was returned from exile.
What was the Habeas Corpus Act?
The Habeas Corpus Act, 1679, was a piece of legislation saying no prisoner can be held unlawfully.
What was the Glorious Revolution?
King William of Orange, a protestant, invade England and proclaimed himself King. This was known as the Glorious Revolution because there was no resistance and parliament’s powers were guaranteed. This ended the threat of a monarch ruling however they wanted to.
