The 1960s were known as the Swinging Sixties, and there was growth in fashion, cinema and popular music. Women’s laws, in workplaces, equal pay, divorce and abortions, were liberalised. This was also a time of great technological progress.

The post-war economic boom ended in the 1970s. Unstable global currencies led to sharp price increases. This led to strikes and unrest between unions and the government. There was also major unrest in Northern Ireland where fighting caused 3,000 deaths.

The NHS was established in 1948 with the newly elected labour government after WWII.
