The Truman Doctrine And Marshall Plan Flashcards
Consequences of the Marshall plan
Simply accelerated the division of Europe and further undermined the possibility of international relations
Led to the creation of two juxtaposing camps: cap west and com east. This ideological bifurcation made it harder for the. To negotiate, likelihood of cooperation diminishes
What was cominform
In stalins eyes, the USA was engineering an anti soviet, us led global alliance
Cominform= tool for cementing a soviet dominated bloc in Eastern Europe, undermine us strategy , symbolised Stalins determination to create a monolithic[ unable to be separated] communist bloc ,deepening the divide.
Why did tensions increase ?
Confrontation refined= the Truman doctrine
Iron curtain and long telegram = intellectual foundations of the Cold War.
USSR consolidated its influence over Eastern European states through cominform and zhandov doctrine= dollar imperialism .
Arguments supporting the view that the Marshall plan was important to the growth of Cold War
. USSR viewed it as dollar imperialism. In the Paris peace agreement, Stalin ordered states who were tempted to h the aid to reject it, establishing his own aim for a communist bloc in Eastern Europe manifested in the creation of cominform in 1947 which aimed to Sovietise communist states politically, culturally and economically by making them pro Moscow, which symbolised Stalins determination to create a monolithic communist bloc, deepening the divide. This ideological bifurcation made it harder for them to negotiate, likelihood of cooperation diminishes.
The mp also greatly accelerated the division of Europe as Stalin felt it was an attempt to undermine the soviet sphere of influence by targeting countries such as Czechoslovakia and Hungary who were not pro Moscow yet, further deepens the culture of mistrust and any sort of aspiration for cooperation was eroded, all of the above set the scene for the Cold War to accelerate.
Arguments challenging the view that the mp was important to the growth of Cold War tensions
Aggressive occupation n control of satellite states by the ussr from 1945 onwards meant that Cold War tensions were growing anyway, so mp not that important . The td and mp had been declared in response to Stalins occupation of Eastern Europe n thus the aggressive atmosphere of the Cold War had been created.
How did the Truman doctrine increase Cold War tensions
Bc it refined the existing confrontation and made the us policy more aggressive towards potential subjugation of European states by the ussr.
Radical change in approach from isolationism to the active containment of communism. The Soviet Union viewed this doctrine as evidence of the USA interfering with the ussrs sphere of influence and expanding its own
How did the long telegram increase tensions
Kennans LT helped to cement americas attitude towards containment and reiterated the idea that the SU regime was cruel, oppressive and imperialistic . It would form the basis of American policies of containment for the next 25 years therefore showing that this was more important than the mp in the growth of cw tensions, underpinned it
How did Stalin view the iron curtain speech
Convinced him that the USA n uk were involved in a plot to ideologically attack the su n destroy their repuation, led to cominform
