what does the masthead and typography connote?
The masthead is bold and recognisable, it signifies the ideology as it reports/reflects on current issues. the typography is strong and commands the front page (either side of the crest). this is unchanged as they intend to reinforce their longevity and traditional values.
what can be said about the layout?
conventional for broadsheet, quality newspaper. text-led rather than image-led. ‘In the News’ section at the bottom which jump links to main inside stories.
what is the page split between?
political stories and a plug promoting Times2 (lifestyle supplement). features a fitness article and personal story on being bitten by a puppy.
what does the headline and subheadings connote?
‘Police investigates PM’s four lockdown parties’ - informative rather than dramatic and enigmatic. Similar with ‘Gray criticises leadership and drinking culture. There is subtle implicit criticisms through language use. ‘four’ and ‘drinking culture’
what do the pull quotes connote?
direct quotes from Gray’s report. large quotation marks emphasise their importance. positioning in white on black background gives them prominence, they function as an anchor for the central image.
what does the main image connote?
a close-up photo with indirect mode of address. his code of expression shows trepidation to what is to come as he goes to commons. the photo suggests he does have questions to answer while not explicitly criticising him. long caption and gives fact-based information (typical convention)
what does the language and mode of address connote?
formal. the text is compact and detailed. sub-headings don’t split up stories, showing readers are comfortable with detailed writing. ‘The Times Verdict’ - subheading with jump lines analysing inside stories, establishes newspaper as opinion leader. the plug is bright colour scheme to differentiate between lighter and serious elements.
what does the ‘In the News’ section do?
offers brief summary of other content inside, including global aspect.
what is Levi-Strauss’s theory?
newspaper creates meaning through structuralism, typical codes and conventions fulfil audience’s expectations and appeal to loyal readers. The Times demonstrates a less explicit political allegiance, offer more than 1 viewpoint on the issue.
