Q

Describe the particle arrangement in a solid ?

A
  1. Packed together in a regular pattern with no spaces between the particles: hard to compress
  2. Solid particles can vibrate but cannot move from place to place

Q

Why do we have to convert energy into a solid to convert it to a liquid ?

A

Liquids have more kinetic energy than a solid
It is neeeded to break the forces of attraction between the particles in a solid
Once broken they are free to move

Q

If a structure has strong forces of attraction…..

A

We need to put more kinetic energy in to break these forces often in the form of heat

Q

If a solid is easy to break then explain why ?

A

Forces of attraction between particles are relatively weak so they are fairly easy to break so low melting point aswell as easy to brake

This is the opposite for something with a high melting point/ hard

Q

What happens when we freeze a substance ?

A

We cool it down to below its boiling point and the forces of attraction between particles reform

Q

What are the limitations of the simple particle model ?

A

It assumes all particles are simple solid spheres however this is not the case
It’s assumed there are no forces between the particles however this is incorrect
