Covalent Bonding Flashcards
What atoms bond in covalent bonding ?
Non metal atoms
What are some examples of simple covalent molecules ?
H2
Hydrogen
How do you draw covalent bonds ?
Energy level diagram
You do the rings with the dot and cross
The rings will overlap and you put the amount of electors in that part
So if it was hydrogen
You would do two rings and one for and one cross in the middle
You only draw the outer shell
Are single covalent bonds strong ?
Yes single covalent bond is a strong bond
How else can we represent covalent bonds ?
A stick diagram
H-H
The line represents the covalent bond
What are two examples of simple covalent substances
H20 and CH4 and NH3
Water and methane and ammonia
How do we draw a double covalent bond in a stick diagram ? Use oxygen as the example
O=O
What are the two key properties of small covalent molecules
Low melting and boiling points (most small covalent molecules are gassed to liquids at room temp)
Do not conduct electricity
Explain why small covalent bonds have low melting and boiling points ?
The atoms in a covalent molecule are held together by strong covalent bonds
Weak intermolecular forces between molecules
So because of the weak intermolecular forces it doesn’t require much energy in the form of heat to overcome
What is the key fact for covalent molecules ?
Weak intermolecular forces that do not require a lot of energy to brake
However the bigger the molecule the stronger the intermolecular forces requiring more energy to brake
Are covalent bonds broken when a substance melts or boils ?
No
Why do small covalent molecules not conduct electricity ?
Small covalent molecules do not have an overall electric charge
