Ionic Bonding Flashcards
Why do elements react ?
To achieve a full outer shell and achieve the stable electronic structure of a noble gas
What particles are in ionic bonding ?
Metal and a non metal react
How do we draw a dot and cross diagram for ionic bonding ?
At the start you draw out the atoms of each one like [O]
Then you transfer the electrons using the dot and cross method
For example
[O] + [o] ——- [O]-1 + [o]+1
What are ions ?
an atom with an overall charge
How is an ionic bond formed ?
Electrons in the outer shell of the metal atom are TRANSFERRED to the non metal atom
METAL atoms LOSE…..ELECTRONS to become POSITIVELY CHARGED IONS
NON METAL atoms GAIN….ELECTRONS to become NEGATIVELY CHARGED IONS
What does ionic bonding produce ?
A positivitvly charged metal ion
A negatively charged non metal ion
What do ionic compounds form ?
Giant structures called giant ionic lattice
Also 3 dimensional structures
How is a giant ionic lattice arranged ?
Every positive ion is surrounded by negative ions
What are the structure of a giant ionic lattice ?
Every positive ion is surrounded by negative ions
Strong electrostatics forces of attraction between the positive and negative ions
What type of force is in an ionic compound ?
Strong electrostatic forces of attraction ( ionic bonds)
What are the two key properties of ionic compounds ?
Ionic compounds have very high melting and boiling points
Cannot conduct electricity as solid
Why do ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points ?
strong electrostatic forces of attraction require lots of energy in the form of heat to overcome
Why can ionic compounds not conduct electricity as solids ?
Strong electrostatic forces of attraction, ions can vibrate but cannot move
However when melted or dissolved the ions are free to move and carry electrical charge
