Diamond And Silicone Flashcards
What are the three types of giant covalent substances you should know ?
Silicon dioxide
Diamond
Graphite ( next deck)
What state are giant covalent substances at room temperature ?
Always solids at room temperature
Why are all giant covalent structures solid at room temperature ?
They all have high melting and boiling points
Why do giant covalent molecules have high melting and boiling points ?
They have millions of strong covalent bonds
In order to melt/boil these substances it requires a lot of energy in the form of heat to overcome these bonds
What element is diamond formed from ?
Carbon
What does diamond contain ?
A huge number of covalently bonded carbon atoms
What are the three properties of diamond ? Explain for each one
Extremely hard: due to the millions of covalently bonded carbon atoms
High melting/ boiling point: very high melting and boiling point due to it requiring lots of energy in the form of heat to overcome these bonds
Cannot conduct electricity: all of the outer electrons are in covalent bonds so it has no free electrons to carry a charge
What is silicon dioxide made up of ?
Silicon and oxygen covalently bonded together
What are the properties of silicon dioxide ?
Very high melting and boiling point: huge number of strong covalent bonds which require a lot of energy in the form of heat to overcome
Define a giant covalent molecule ?
Huge numbers of non metals atoms bonded to each other by covalent bonds generally arranged into repeating lattices
