The Thigh Flashcards
Name three compartments, # of muscles, main function. What seperates the section?
Anterior – 7 muscles, Extensor
Medial – 6 muscles, Adductor
Posterior – 3 muscles, Flexor
Intramuscular septa.
Patella
What is it?
Function?
Largest sesamoid bone (floating) triangular with apex pointing inferior
Works as a lever–muscle bends over patella to increase the leverage the tendon can exert on the femur by increasing the angle.
What is the attachment site on the proximal tibia?
What is the disc that site on the articulating surface?
What do the tibia and fibula together provide?
Tibial tuberosity
Medial and lateral miniscus
More attachment sites without weight on fibula.
Name the anterior comparment muscles, main function, nerve, what two connective tissues do they form at the distal end?
Sartorius, Quadraceps femoris–Rectus femoris, Vastus lateralis, Vastus medialis, Vastus intermedius.
Extensors of knee.
Femoral n.
Quadraceps tendon to Patellar ligament.
Sartorius

N
A: ASIS, Medial surface of the tibia
F:Mainly hip flexor, flexes the leg at knee, externally rotates thigh

N Femoral n.
Patellar Ligament
Describe function and attachment site.
Common attachment for quad femoris muscles. Attaches patella to tibial tuberosity.
What direction does patellar dislocation go?
laterally due to number of muscles attached laterally.
Two Muscles that end at but also begin superiorly to the Inguinal ligament Anterior thigh
N
F
Where might pain occur?
Psoas Major upper lumbar n.
Iliacus femoral n.
Flex thigh at hip.
Causes pain if constricted at inguinal ligament.
Femoral artery.
What is it?
two branches.
major arterial supply to thigh, continuation of ext. iliac art.
branches
Superficial circumflex art.
Profunda femoris (deep art)
Deep artery of thigh
What does it supply?
Where does it branch?
What are the three branches?
Thigh.
3-4cm inferior to inguinal ligament
Medial circumflx femoral (supplies fem head)
Lateral circumflex femoral (They enastomize)
Perforating art.
Veins
Deep vein what is it?
Superficial veins 2. What is one used for?
Femoral–major venous drainage of lower limb.
Great saphenous–used for bypass
Small saphenous–medial dorsal arch.
What is the Femoral Nerve?
Where does it enter thigh?
What does it supply?
Largest branch of lumbar plexus.
Enters thigh posterior to inguinal ligament. (Lateral to femoral artery and vein, lateral to femoral sheath(not in sheath)).
Supplies anterior thigh muscles, hip & Knee joints. (Muscles of anterior compartment.
Femoral Triangle What are its boundaries? What muscles form the floor? What are its four contents? What is useful about the triangle?
Bound by Inguinal lig., Sartorius, Adductor longus.
Adductor longus & Pectineus muscles form the floor.
Contents: Femoral n, Femoral art., Femoral v., Deep inguinal lymph nodes–swell during illness.
NAVL
Area to feel the femoral art.
Used to send catheters to the heart.
