The Theory Of Planned Behaviour Flashcards
What are the three AO3 PEELS to evaluate the theory of planned behaviour?
RTS - alcohol related bhvs
Discussion - weakness - social desirability
Strength - prac apps - predict therapy
P
(RTS - alcohol related bhvs)
RTS - TPB - researcher
E
they asked over 400 ppts to complete questionnaires about their alcohol related bhvs at start of research and then another 3 months later
E
- they found that personal attitudes and subjective norms correlated significantly with intention to limit drinking to guidelines
- perceived control predicted actual unit consumption
L
this supports TPB as the three components interacted to affect indvs intention to stop, inc TPBs val in explaining bhv change in addP
P
(Discussion - weakness - social desirability)
However, a problem with the research into TPB is that it relies on questionnaires which are prone to social desirability as this is a self report method
E
indvs may lie about their intentions towards their add to present themselves in best possible light
E
e.g. they may say they intend to drink within guidelines to avoid being judged
L
therefore this reduces val of RTS TPB of behaviour change
P
(Strength - prac apps - predict therapy)
Strength - TPB - prac apps
E
- this is bc the principles of TPB can be used to predict whos therapy will be most effective/successful
- e.g. if an indv is missing one of the components such as attitudes, they will not be offered therapy as they have no intention to change
E
- this benefits economy by helping NHS prioritise their limited resources on indv with high intention to change
- and reduce waiting times for therapy
L
therefore TPB i.a.p.o.a.p as it can be used to prioritise add treatment in real world to those most willing to quit add
