Reducing Addiction - Drug Therapy Flashcards
What are the three AO3 PEELS to evaluate drug therapy as a way of reducing addictions?
RTS - NRT vs placebo
Strength - little motivation
Weakness - side effects
P
(RTS - NRT vs placebo)
RTS effectiveness of NRT was conducted by a researcher
E
they reviewed 150 high quality research studies that compared the use of NRT with a placebo
E
they found that all forms of NRT were significantly more effective in helping smokers quit than placebos as it reduces withdrawal symptoms
L
therefore supporting drug therapy as a way of reducing add as it has been found to be very effective
P
(Strength - little motivation)
A strength of drug therapy in red add is that it requires little motivation from patient
E
this is bc patient just has to wear a patch or chew gum to reduce add
E
- unlike CBT where patient has to commit to attending sessions for months to identify and challenge thoughts and complete hwk
- therefore requiring more effort and motivation
L
therefore drug therapy may be seen as a more appropiate way of reducing add compared to CBT
P
(Weakness - side effects)
However, a limitation of using drug therapy such as NRT and opioid antagonists is that they have neg side effects
E
common side effects include sleep disturbance, stomach problems and headaches
E
unlike CBT which is non invasive as this works on identifying and challenging irrational thoughts ass with add bhv
L
therefore drug therapy may not be very effective in treating add as indv may stop treatment due to neg side effects, resulting in relapse
