Reducing Addiction - CBT Flashcards
What are the three AO3 PEELS to evaluate CBT as a way of reducing addictions?
RTS - gamblers anonymous vs CBT
Weakness - requires motivation and commitment
Strength - avoids chemical dependence
P
(RTS - gamblers anonymous vs CBT)
RTS effectiveness of CBT was conducted by a researcher
E
- they randomly allocated gamblers to a control group who received gamblers anonymous meetings
- OR a treatment condition who had both GA meetings and CBT programme
E
it was found that patients in the treatment condition were gambling significantly less than the control group of patients
L
- therefore showing the effectiveness of CBT in reducing add in gambling
- bc it shows by challenging cog bias/distortions on gambling, it can reduce add
P
(Weakness - requires motivation and commitment)
However, a limitation of CBT in reducing addiction is that it may not be as effective as it requires motivation and commitment from patient
E
this is bc patient has to commit to attending CBT sessions over months, challenge irrational thoughts causing add and complete hwk outside of sessions such as avoidance strategies
E
- this is unlike drug therapy such as NRT where patient just has to wear patch or chew gum to reduce add
L
therefore CBT may be seen as a less appr treatment for reducing add compared to drug therapy as patients may stop attending sessions therefore relapse
P
(Strength - avoids chemical dependence)
Strength - avoids chemical dependence
E
- this is bc patients are taught skills to identify and challenge their own cog bias/distortions causing add
- e.g. feeling they cant cope w out substance/bhv and so they are taking control of their own add
E
- this is unlike drug therapy where patient is dependent on drugs to control their add by regulating levels of nic/dop
L
therefore it is argued CBT is a more appr way to reduce add as patients dont become dependent on a drug
