Thatcher consolidated her position as a leader.

Isolation and decline.
What were her political beliefs?

What did Monetarism under Thatcher imply?
Reducing the economic intervention of the state to create greater industrial competitively, and confront unions.
What did she believe socialism had brought about ?
A dependency culture, she believed her working members of the society were subsidising the lazy.
Why did her nostalgia appal to the British?
Because her victorian values and perception of Britain brought to mind a great colonial past.
How did she get the nickname “The Iron Lady”?
By the Soviet Media in 1976 for her strong anti-communist views.
How did the Falkland islands help her?
The invasion of the Falkland islands by General Galtieri in 1982 gave her the chance to prove herself in the face of danger and really earn her nickname. This later on would help her in her reelection.
What were her aims for her second term?
- cut inflation to as near zero as possible.
- cut public spending especially in local government
- to cut taxes, especially income taxes
- to deregulate the economy
- to curb the Trade Union power
What did the taming of Unions have as a price?
Great social divide.
What was the Poll Tax?
Thatcher wanted individuals to pay rather than home owners.
What led to Margaret Thatcher’s downfall?
Her increasingly authoritarian style, which eventually led her own party to turn against her.
Who took over from her?
Her chosen successor, John Major.
