The Structure Of The Cardiovascular System & Blood Vessels Flashcards
A labelled diagram of the heart
Insert diagram
What is the function of the Vena Cava?
- Veins bringing deoxygenated blood back to heart to lungs.
What is the function of the aorta?
- Artery moving oxygenated blood away from the left ventricle to working muscles
- Has a thicker wall and blood travels further.
What is the function of the Pulmonary artery?
- Deoxygenated blood in to right ventricle to the lungs and pick up O2.
Function of the pulmonary vein.
Oxygenated blood in from lungs to the left atrium.
What do valves do?
The valves prevent blood flowing back into the chamber.
What does the semi-lunar valve do?
- It separates the ventricle from the pulmonary artery & vein.
Where is the tricuspid valve?
The right side between ventricle and atrium.
Where is the bicuspid valve?
The left side between the ventricle and atrium.
What is the role of the right atrium?
Takes deoxygenated blood in from the vena cava.
What is the role of the septum?
It’s the wall that divides 2 sides.
Which way do arteries and veins carry their blood?
Arteries - carry the blood away from the heart —> except pulmonary artery.
Veins - carries blood back to the heart.
What us the role of the left atrium?
Takes the oxygenated blood and buts it into the pulmonary vein.
What’s the role of the right ventricle?
Takes the deoxygenated blood to the right atrium
What is the role of the left ventricle?
Takes the oxygenated blood from the left atrium.
List what happens during exercise.
1) Increase blood flow to working muscles.
Why?
2) Increased demand for O2
3) Provides energy
How?
4) Through O2 in red blood cells
5) Heart rate increases to maintain supply.
What blood does the heart pump to the working muscles?
Oxygenated blood.
What blood does the heart pump to the lungs?
Deoxygenated blood
