The Respiratory System Flashcards
Define tidal volume.
The amount of air that is inspired & expired normally (breathed in and out).
Define breathing rate.
The number of breaths taken in a minute (normally).
What is oxygen debt?
- After intense exercise - to break down the lactic acid.
- O2 needed to oxidise lactic acid —> CO2.
- Deep, heavy breathing aft yer exercise to repay debt.
- Only occurs with anaerobic exercise!
What is the definition of lung capacity?
The amount of air (volume) the lungs can hold.
What is the definition of minute ventilation?
The volume of air that is inspired or expired in 1 minute.
What is the equation for minute ventilation?
Tidal volume x breathing rate = minute ventilation
TV x f = VE
What is the respiratory system like a treat?
The breathing rate is slow and shallow (normal).
What happens in the respiratory system during exercise?
The rate of breathing gets faster (increases) & depth of breathing also increases and allows more air in.
How does the respiratory system work with the cardio vascular system?
- Work together to increase o2 supply & remove CO2 efficiently O2 in CO2 out = gaseous exchange.
- The more efficient the cardiovascular & respiratory systems, the - longer
- more intensely
You can train/exercise
What happens in sport in the respiratory system?
The fitter you are, the more efficient 02 intake & utilisation becomes.
What is the percentage of gases in the O2 inhaled?
Nitrogen - 78%
Oxygen - 21%
Carbon dioxide - 0.04%
+ water vapour
What is the percentage of the gases in the CO2 exhaled?
Nitrogen - 78%
Oxygen - 16%
Carbon dioxide - 4%
+ water vapour
How is the 02 moved around?
O2 is moved around the body via blood, pumped round via the heart.
