1.What are the main characters ?
-MR UTTERSON =London lawyer and friend of Dr jekyll
-DR JEKYLL = doctor who also turns into MR HYDE
2.How does the plot start?
-Mr Utterson is out on a walk with a relative called Mr Enfield when they pass a strange-looking door. Enfield recalls a story of awhile ago where a girl had been trampled over by a certain Mr Hyde and the family was refunded with a check inn nome di Dr Jekyll.
- What raises the suspicion of Mr Utterson?
-Mr Utterson is the executioner of Dr Jekyll’s will and he knows that if Dr Jekyll were to die all of his possession were to go to a certain Mr Hyde.
A year later Mr Hyde attacks someone and Mr Utterson is involved in the investigation cuz he knows the victim
- How does the story end?
One night Jekyll’s butler is afraid that the doctor has been killed by Mr Hyde so he calls Mr Utterson
Utterson later finds Mr Hyde dead in the laboratory dressed as dr Jekyll and he finds a letter from dr jekyll explaining about the potion the transformations etc
5.What are some of the elements that make this novel a crime story ?
- there is a mystery that needs to be solved
- there is a detective ( Mr Utterson) who discovers clues and forms hypotheses
-Mr Utterson tries to solve the mystery because he thinks dr Jekyll is somewhat tied to Mr Hyde against his will. the relationship between Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is defined as a “strange case”
- What can you say about the setting ?
- It takes place in the London of the Late Victorian Age
-the ambivalence of the main character reflects the hypocrisy of Victorian society
-the setting go from middle class and wealthy places to more poorer districts
- the events happen at night
- What are its most important themes?
-duality of human nature
-the main character’s duality is a reflection od the idea that human being are neither just good or just evil, but are made of two sides which are in perpetual struggle
-He captured the mood of change of the last decades of the 9 th century and expressed the moral dichotomy between good and evil which expressed hypocrisy of his time.
- What narrative technique is employed?
-multiple narrative structure with a complex series of points of view
-the characters that narrate the story are = Mr Enfield, Mr Utterson, Dr Lanyon ( who witnesses the transformations and prefers too ei rather than live in such a world) and finally Dr Jekyll
