The Stages Of Consiousness Flashcards
1
Q
What does an EEG do
A
Records amplitude and frequency
2
Q
What are the different states of consciousness
A
- Beta
Alert and working (high frequency, low amplitude) - Alpha
Relaxed and reflecting (high frequency, high amplitude) - Theta
Drowsy and ideating - Delta
Sleeping, dreaming
3
Q
Heartbeat
A
When we fall asleep our heart rate slows
- We can consciously control our heart rate by controlling our breathing
- heart rate can be raised with the use of stimulants that lead to altered states of consciousness
4
Q
Body temperature
A
Body temperature changes with our states of consciousness, for example before we fall asleep our body temperature drops a few degrees
Our lowest temperature occurs around 3am - 4am
5
Q
Galvanic skin response
A
Measured by attaching electrodes to hair free parts of the body. If we sweat and our skin is wet an electrical current passes more easily then if the skin was dry. Sweating occurs when we are aroused, either anxious or fearful or excited.
