The Spectrum of Teaching Styles Flashcards
What do we need to do within teaching to create a holistic learning experience?
WHY, WHAT, HOW
-The importance of knowledge- WHAT is taught
-The quality of content- HOW it is taught
What is the most common framework within PE?
The Spectrum of Teaching Styles
Moston and Ashworth (1990)
Presents a continuum of teaching styles from teacher centred to learner centred
A theoretical framework based on the idea that teaching is a chain of DECISION MAKING
Explain the lay out of the Spectrum of Teaching Styles?
- The Axiom- “teaching is a chain of decision making”
- The anatomy of any style- pre-impact, impact, post impact
- The Decision Makers
- The Spectrum
Describe and explain the anatomy of any style within the Framework of Teaching Styles?
“refers to the conceivable categories of decisions that must be made”
3 sets- pre impact= planning and preparing decisions
impact= the implementation and pedagogical encounter
post-impact= assessment and feedback
Explain the LANDMARK OF TEACHING STYLES:
From A-K
A-E is reproductive= reproduction of past knowledge
DISCOVERY THRESHOLD
E-K is productive= expand on past knowledge
Explain the LANDMARK OF TEACHING STYLES from A-E:
A- COMMAND- practitioner makes decisions, participant copies and complies
B- PRACTICE- practitioner sets up opportunities and gives feedback
C- RECIPROCAL- work together receiving feedback from each other
D- SELF CHECK- sets a success criteria and checks against it
E-INCLUSION- variety of tasks and learner selects the most appropriate for their level
Explain the LANDMARK OF TEACHING STYLES from F-K:
F- GUIDED DISCOVERY- a set of questions and tasks to guide learner
G-CONVERGENT DISCOVERY- work together to find one solution
H-DIVERGENT DISCOVERY- work together to find multiple solutions
I- INDIVIDUAL- practitioner sets an area of focus
J- LEARNER INITIATED
K- SELF TEACHING
Explain what happens as you move from A-K?
The learner is given more roles and responsibilities, moving them from simply copying to being independent
THE ROLE SHIFTS
How can we determine which learning style to use?
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
CONTEXT-demographics, prior learning, group characteristics
“adopting a variety of styles will facilitate more effective and inclusive teaching”
(Hodges and Cothran, 2003)
What are “developmental effects”?
Employment of the Spectrum of Teaching Styles can bring about what Mosston and Ashworth term
“Developmental Effects”
=taken to be the dev of desirable characteristics/ attributes
Developmental effects are related to the domains of learning (psychomotor, cognitive, affective)
=HOLISTIC LEARNING
