Pedagogical Models within PE Flashcards
Why have traditional approaches to PE been criticised?
- They adopt a “one size fits all approach”- limited capacity for diverse learners
- Ineffective at enhancing pupils knowledge, understanding and skills- multi-activity model doesn’t allow improvement
DECONTEXTUALISED learning - Disconnect learning from wider movement cultures- content driven> learning driven
(Ennis 2014 , Meltzer 2017)
What does Ennis state about traditional approaches to PE?
“relevance of multi-activity model has been questioned” (Ennis, 2014)
What is MbP -Models Based Practice concerned with in PE?
“ensuring that teachers have a comprehensive and coherent plan for teaching and learning”
(O Donnovan, 2011)
Why are MbP said to be able to deliver high quality programmes?
-Clarity of purpose (LO’s)
-Broader learning focus (multiple domains)
-Explicit approach= instructional approaches
What do (Joyce and Weil, 1996) state about MbP?
“a planned pattern that can be used to share curriculum to design instructional material and guide information”
-MbP represents a movement away from the privileging of subject matter to students.
What does Kirk state about MbP?
“enables PE to better demonstrate the educational value”
=multi-model curriculum
=hybrid models to access more domains
What are the negatives of MbP?
-challenging to implement
-can be a hard curriculum referral
-requires a a lot of teacher expertise
What are the range of models within MbP?
-Teaching Games for Understanding
-Sport Education
-Cooperative Learning
-Teaching personal social responsibility
-Health based PE
Explain Teaching Games for Understanding? (TGfU)
-Bunker and Thorpe (1982)
-They recognised traditional approaches constrained learning
-6 key stages
-4 guiding principles
What are the 6 key stages to the TGfU model?
- Game form
- Game Appreciation
- Tactical Awareness
4.Decision Making - Skill Execution
- Performance
What are the four guiding principles of the TGfU model?
(R
(E
(T
(S
Representation- dev modified game
Exaggeration- emphasise particulate game features
Tactical complexity
Sampling- exploring similarities
What are the positives of TGfU?
Enhances decision making capabilities
Development of “off the ball” play
Promotes holistic learning
What are the negatives of TGfU?
Requires teacher preparation
Demands teacher to reposition themselves
Modify games in relevant ways
Perceived as an easy option
(Harvey et al, 2010)
(Meltzer, 2017)
Explain the Cooperative Learning model?
CL
-CL model involves pupils working together on a clearly assigned task
-Putting the social learning domain at front and centre
-CL model seeks to “maximise their own learning whilst also maximising that of their own”
(Jhonson et al, 2008)
What are the five key elements of the CL model?
- Positive interdependance
- Individual accountability
- Promote face to face interaction
- Interpersonal and small group tasks
- Group Processing
