What is shaken baby syndrome ?
Shaken baby syndrome is a form of child abuse that causes severe brain damage. As little as five seconds of forcible, violent shaking is enough to cause a serious brain injury in a baby.
How does shaken baby syndrome affect a child?
The forceable shaking causes the baby’s delicate brain to repeatedly hit the inside of the skull, damaging fragile blood vessels. This may result in bruising, bleeding and swelling of the brain.
What other injuries may be present in shaken baby syndrome?
Bruising, bleeding and swelling of spine and neck.
What are the symptoms of shaken baby syndrome?
- difficulty staying awake
- body tremors
- trouble breathing
- poor eating
- vomiting
- discoloured skin
- seizures
Why are older people more needy?
immune system becomes less effective so the risk of illness increases. With age, the number of immune cells may decrease slightly. Cells become less effective and less able to control illness. Response to injury becomes slower. Ability to detect and fight cancer is also decreased
Why do we need to ask whether caller could be pregnant?
Pregnant women with abdominal pain needs to be assessed differently. Most importantly we need to make sure that she isn’t in labour

Pregnancy increases the risk of certain conditions such as urine infection. As well as making the woman unwell, some conditions can sometimes harm the baby. Some infections like rubella, whilst dangerous to the baby, may have little effect on the mother.
What is pre-eclampsia ?
A rate but serious condition affecting expectant mothers that can progress to a condition called exclampsia which is life threatening for both the mother and baby. A symptom is a headache.
