A

What was Mary’s Marriage Treaty? (8)

A

-the son of the marriage would inherit England and the low countries but not Spain
-if the only surviving child were to be a daughter the same provisions would apply
-if there were no heirs or if Mary were to die before Philip neither he or his heirs would have any claim to the English throne
-Philip was to receive the title ‘King’ and rule as joint sovereign but he could not possess any sovereign in his own right
-he could not promote foreigners to hold office in England
-he had to uphold the laws of England
-he was not allowed to take the queen or any children they might have out of the country without permission of the nobility
-England was to uphold the treaties of 1543 and 1546 with the Netherlands which stated that the former should come to the aid of the latter with 6,000 men if the provinces were invaded by the French

How did the Marriage treaty limit Philip’s power? (7)

A

-his heirs couldn’t inherit Spain
-he or his heirs couldn’t take over if Mary died
-he didn’t have much power he only received the title of King
-he couldn’t have foreigners in the office->no foreign influence over England
-no Spanish laws->limited him as he would know English laws less than Spanish
-he wasn’t allowed to take Mary or any of their children out of England ->Mary wouldn’t be forced /persuaded to leave England and she would rule no matter the situation and he couldn’t control that
-he didn’t have a lot of control which reduced his power in England

A

-they would be reassured due to Philip not having as much control as the usual King they are used to-> Mary would have the most power
-they wouldn’t have to fear the fact that their children could inherit both England and Spain->could only inherit England
